So if I go to Africa, do I get to look this good?
Posted by: Ralph at September 2, 2004 02:22 AMHunka burnin' love. When are you coming to Cairo???
Posted by: Bridget at September 2, 2004 11:22 AMjake,
I must say that the states are lack luster without your presence. The republicans are being jack-asses in NYC, using a human trajety to back their bullshit agenda. To me the best part of this country are people like you, who act and live what everybody else talks about. The talkers take potential action and put it up on a mantle to be idealized. When we talk instead of act we as humans have a way of rationalizing shortcuts that undermine human dignity. You go to third world countries not under the asssumption that they are savages the need spiritual salvation as the missionaries once did, but as a human being that knows that one's actions are the greatest catalyst for social change available to us as individuals.
Leading by example, think of what you are doing, Im proud as hell to even know you man. You'll be in Bali with me in spirit mandingo! I'll approach Bali's waves like an unleashed demon, but their people like a humble student. I'll try to be a part of your philosophy when im there with respect for the people and their beliefs and come back a better human being.
peace,
mark OD

Jake,
Looks like you're staying healthy. A bit skinny, but you've still got the "guns". You're doing good work out there, and I really respect your courage. Actions speak much louder than words, and you are living proof.
By the way, Kathy and I are getting married next Saturday. Wish you could be there, but you've definitely got more important things to do.
Stay healthy and optimistic. I can't wait for your return and all the stories you'll have to tell. You need to write a book!
Best,
Sean
Posted by: sean maloy at September 5, 2004 01:49 AMYou look just as I expect you to look; hale, hearty and ready to take it all on. Keep it up.
My own puny efforts to volunteer are more or less at a summer hiatus at the moment. I spent one two hour stint at ACT (Americans Coming Together), but they are another get out the vote campaign. My concern is that there are so many of them making phone calls to the same people, that they may be turning people off. Eugene is largely a Democratic city. Kerry visited here.
What you are doing is so much more important than being involved in the political campaigning, but don't forget to vote.
Love ya, Phyllis

I have never seen a people more ready to smile with a visiting traveler. The balinese have a dignity that trancends their impovershed state, built on their deep respect for the pursuits of the human being. Within a short period of time, I felt like I was a family member to many that I regularly interacted with. The older women teased me as I laughed heartily and hugged them in thier joking as I would my own grandmother. Love and respect needs no translators. They have a saying in bali that translates into the community helping the burden of the individual during the difficult events that life brings such as death. Americans should be so lucky.
