Malawi Facts

Population: 11 million

- The average annual income per person is $160 compared to $34,280 in the US. Malawi ranks 199 out of 208 countries (only Liberia, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Ethiopia, and the Congo are poorer). If you take into account the relative costs of goods in Malawi (purchasing power parity) they make the equivalent of $560 per year and are ranked 206 out of 208.

- 42% of the population live below the international poverty line of $1 per day (76% below $2 per day)

- Life expectancy at birth is 38 years compared to 78 in the US.

- Only 57% of the population has access to clean water supply (US 100%)

- 183 out of 1000 children die before the age of 5 (US rate is 8)

- 1.3 PCs per 1000 people (US is 625)

- 11 fixed and mobile phone subscribers per 1000 people (US is 1,118)

- A total of 20,000 internet users

- 6.35% of males and 14.9% females between the age of 15 and 24 are infected with HIV (US is 0.47% and 0.23%)

- Adult literacy rate is 61%

- 18.5% of the roads are paved

- In the largest city, Lilongwe (pop 765,000), 65% of households have access to potable water, 12% have a sewage connection, 50% have electricity, and 10% have a telephone
