Spoke to Jake via cell phone, March 30th. He's in good health and his spirits are great. I read him the comments that you have sent and he really appreciated them all. He thinks it's hysterical that both of his sisters are on the website checking comments a couple of times a day :) Anyway, thanks for your words of support, encouragement, and love to him.
Safari-
He just returned from Liwonde National Park, where he and the other volunteers spent a few days. He said it was unbelievable! They were up at 5 AM every day looking for rhinos, but only saw elephants, monkeys, and unique birds. OK, I'm jealous :)Apparently the baboons were a real nuisance, stealing food daily from the campsite. Jake said the trip was awesome and there was a lot of laughter between him and the PC staff during the camping trip.
Location-
He learned his site announcement while he was away...He will be living in Zolokere in the Rumphi District. It is in the northern part of Malawi. It's far from the capital, but he really likes the group of volunteers that are already there and that are going there now. He spoke of a few people that he has already befriended. One problem with the area is that there are too many elephants..I'm sure there will be more to come from Jake about that.
Rats-
There are rats in his hut. When I asked him how big, he said he didn't know...He doesn't look, but hears them. When I shrieked and asked how he deals with that, he said "I sleep in my sleeping bag underneat the mosquito netting and try not to think about it."
That's all for now...
Love and peace.

Well it's realy intresting to hear these news from Jake. I hope everything will be ok with him. My respect for him, because of the way he chose. Best regards to him!!
Posted by: Giedrius at April 1, 2004 08:11 AMGreat to hear about Jake. What a different experience there in comparison to one in Birzai, Lietuva. I am sure Jake will do wonderfully. We from Lietuva will wait for him to return and have a Malawi party!!!
Posted by: Jolita at April 5, 2004 11:46 AMJake- Not to worry about the rats. Jason says to take eggplant, tomatoes, green peppers, squash and blend with the little (big) critters.
It's a stew called RATatouille.
All the best-
